Well the first game of the 2017 season has been played and the 3rd XI entertained an experienced Wood Green side at the Academy Ground.
South Wilts won the toss and decided to make first use of the track and batted. The home side made a solid start with Ed Wade (68) and Henry Smith (43) looking solid against the Wood Green opening bowlers.
The middle order all got starts but it was youngster Wade that stood out. He played a controlled innings and looked to keep the score board ticking over. The aim was to score around 200 from the 40 overs but this looked a tall order until Skipper Jody Everett (39) and Ben Richards took on the bowling in the last 7 overs and the wanted total was reached.
In reply, South Wilts really did hit their straps early doors with all bowlers having 5 over stints to get used to bowling competitively for the first time this year.
Almost all of the bowlers took wickets but the outstanding performances came from Ben Richards (3/11), Ben Fisher (2/13) and to top off an excellent match for Ed Wade (2/17). With Skipper Everett actually taking a flying slip catch to roll back the years.
Wood Green were bowled out for 99 in the end after the controlled bowling regularly took wickets.
It was an extremely positive performance from a very young South Wilts side and bodes well for the coming year.
Next Saturday the side travel down the road for the second friendly of the season vs Steeple Langford.
