Openers dominate opening game as new captain gets first win

No dusting off the bats needed for the second XI as Cowley and Kantolinna make light work of the Falkland 2nd XI total.

After winning the toss new captain Rob Pittman elected to field first and was rewarded by his opening bowlers as Matt Burton and Teenager Ben Huntley bowled with great control restricting the opening batsmen to only 1 run per over for the first 10 overs. Jack Richards produced a lovely spell of bowling picking up 2 wickets.

Falklands innings never really got out of first gear and after 40 overs crawled to 138 for 9. Good fielding and accurate bowing never let the batting side get away. Burton returning with figures of 7-3-11-2 and Huntley 7-1-14-1.

After the eagerly awaited first cricket tea of the season the South Wilts openers were ready to set about the small target of 139 runs to win off 40 overs.

Tom Cowley and Miles Kantolinna were on top from ball one, never let any bowlers settle. The target was reached in the 19th over for the loss of only Kantolinna’s wicket with 4 runs required. Kantolinna made 68 including 4 cleanly striked sixes. Cowley held the inning together with a well contructed 58*.

A very good first win of the season the the second XI. Some good performances from all of the team. Next friendly is Saturday 22nd April against Hursley Park 1 XI at home, 1:30pm start.
