Cowley’s hundred a class apart

After a comprehensive 9 wicket win last time out, the second XI were looking to make it 2 from 2 in the preseason friendlies. On Saturday we faced Hursley Park 1st XI from the SPL division 3.

On a hot and sunny down at Skewbridge we won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked like a cracking wicket. Tom Cowley and Sam Arnold opening the batting got off to a great start, making the most of any bad deliveries. Cowley especially fluent through the off side making them of any width offered from the opening bowlers, taking the score to 64 for 0 from 10 overs. Arnold (23) was eventually out with the score on 100.

Tom Pearce and Rob Pittman both made 30s at a run a ball which kept the score ticking over, but it was Cowley who stole the show reaching his hundred in the 28th over. It was a fine innings from TC who latched onto anything loose and at the same time respected the good delivery. Tom Cowley 100* (Retired) 97 balls including 12x4s and 1×6.

The latter stages of the inning saw Marc Burton hit a quick fire 23 off 16 balls boosting the total up to 263 for 6 from 40 overs.

Defending a big score on what was a short boundary required some discipline bowling. Matt and Marc Burton started well restricting the Hursley Park openers to limited scoring opportunities, without making a break through the total was 43 for 0 after 10 overs. First change seam attack of Ben Huntley and James Wade both picked up a wicket a piece of each opener from their 4 overs each.

Dan Cox on his South Wilts debut bowled nicely picking up his first wicket for the club, his 8 overs going for only 33 runs. Tom Pearce bowling towards the short boundary, bowled well with great control. Rob Pittman picked up 2 wickets both caught at slip by Brother Sam, his 4 over only conceding 11 runs including 2 maidens.

A late flurry of hard hitting from Hursley Park’s middle order batter Turner gave the score some respect. He reached a fine 50 from 36 balls hitting 9 boundaries in all. The innings ended on 189 for 5 from 40 overs. A good bowling and fielding display from the 2nd XI insured another win during preseason. Another good game under everybody’s belt looking ahead to the league season which starts on 6th May away to Hambledon. Next week we host Bashley 2nd XI in the final preseason game. 1pm start at South Wilts.
