Club Update – January 2021

I would like to start by wishing all of you a belated Happy New Year. I hope you and your families are safe and well … At least there continues to be some live sport for us to watch from the safety of our sofa! We thought it would be a good idea to take this opportunity to update you on what’s been going on since the end of the summer. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

What’s been happening?

Well …. The committee has continued to meet via Zoom on a monthly basis as we ‘plan’ for a full season, beginning in early April! Even Steve Hatcher has managed to master the online Zoom meetings now … with a little support from fellow committee members. We’ve had no embarrassing ‘zoom meeting’ moments yet! Andy Stagg has taken over as Club Chairman and has brought with him plenty of new ideas and enthusiasm to the role. He had the luxury of about 3 days of retirement from the NHS before taking over the chairmanship…

Chase the Joker has been a great success and hopefully created a bit of excitement … at the time of writing this the Jackpot sits at £950(!) and we are just 7 days away from our first £1000 Jackpot Winner! Steve Hatcher & Andy Cooke have called in a few more officials for the £1000 draw! If you’re not in it yet then get in touch with Steve, there’s £1000 up for grabs! From a Junior & Girls point of view, Stu Nash, Russell Rowe & Jason Reeve have written up their winter plans then promptly ripped them up and had to start again! They are working hard on bringing us some cricket at the earliest opportunity … safety of players remains the priority. It now seems likely that the earliest we may see a resumption of cricket is outdoors in April. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

The Grounds

The Clubhouse has been closed since the start of November (Lockdown 2.0). The Groundsman ensured that the winter pitch renovations were carried out ahead of being furloughed, which is of course vital ahead of the 2021 season. The Groundsman has assured me that we are in a good position, both squares are looking good and he remains poised to jump right back into 2021 pitch preparation as soon as possible. The grounds are still being monitored & remain a focus, but work for now has been curtailed in line with the “Stay at Home” order.

The Sports Club are monitoring this situation and we will work with them to ensure that pitch preparations are happening as and when it is deemed necessary & safe to do so. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Pre-Season Plans

It now appears obvious that Indoor Nets will not happen in 2021 … certainly from a senior point of view. We have made the decision as a playing committee that we will try and get outside at the earliest opportunity. I suggest you invest in an extra jumper and some hand warmers! That said, we are planning on a slightly different pre-season this year .. with a bit of competition. It is open to all our members. Tom Morton has come up with a 9-week team based event, whereby running, cycling, swimming, walking & rowing exercise are tallied via Strava to give your team a score. To enter (we hope most of you will), simply download Strava (no cost) & join the “South Wilts Cricket Club” group, no later than 24th January.

You don’t have to be a Jack Mynott style athlete to take part, it’s simply about getting out and being active. You can record any exercise, from dog walks to marathon running! Sign up, get involved …. And a bit of fun with some good health benefits! …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Club Shop

Don’t forget to buy your kit for the upcoming season! Everything you need is available on the club shop website … https://www.gray-nicolls.co.uk/collections/south-wilts-cricket-club?ref=13280

A great range of items available, let’s make sure we all look the part! ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Memberships

We are hoping and planning for a full season as it stands. That said, we are not expecting to provide catering for the 2021 season. We are looking to approve 2021 subscriptions very shortly but hopefully you saw the proposal that came out with AGM documents. Subscriptions this year can be paid online via GoCardless. We have offered a few different options for payment. If you would rather pay in cash or Bank transfer then this is fine, please get in contact with us.

Visit the website for more details: http://www.southwiltscc.com/?page_id=2577

This year, more than any other season we would appreciate your support in getting subscriptions paid at the earliest possible opportunity to assist with our club cashflow, which remains a prime focus. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Sponsorship & Support

It is no secret that 2020 was tough on the club financially, a situation that remains in the balance for the 2021 season. Many of our wonderful sponsors will have had a very tough 12 months and quite rightly will be looking forward to rebuilding as soon as they allowed. Our thoughts are absolutely with them under these most difficult of circumstances.

We are always on the lookout for new sponsors to secure the future of South Wilts Cricket Club and I would ask that you spend 5 minutes of your time giving this some thought. As a club we do have large outgoings and are reliant on our kind sponsors and Vice presidents … they afford us the luxury of turning up on a Saturday and enjoying our cricket in the best conditions.

If you know anyone (friends/family/employers) who you think may consider supporting/Sponsoring the Cricket Club, from match balls to shirt sponsors, then please let us know. Steve Hatcher remains in charge of Sponsorship so please contact him (hatcher23@hotmail.co.uk) with any suggestions, he will happily do the rest. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Finally, I would like to finish by wishing you all a safe and well start to 2021. The season is just around the corner now and we have everything crossed for an unaffected season and a chance to get outside, play some cricket under blue skies and enjoy each other’s companies.

If anyone associated with the Club requires some support or just fancies a chat then please do not hesitate to contact myself or one of the other committee members.

Stay Safe & my very best wishes,

James Hayward

Club Captain
