South Wilts 1st XI vs Portsmouth CC – Won by 81 runs
South Wilts produced an excellent all-round display at St Helens Ground, posting 265 before bowling Portsmouth out for 184 to secure a convincing 81-run victory. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the innings was built around a superb century from Tom Cheater, whose 101 from 98 balls combined controlled accumulation with positive stroke play. James Degg added a composed 53 at the top of the order, while Archie Fairfax-Ross accelerated the scoring with a lively 41 from 32 deliveries. Contributions throughout the middle order ensured South Wilts maintained momentum despite regular wickets, finishing on a highly competitive total in the final over.
Portsmouth began brightly in reply thanks largely to Nazim Siddiqui’s aggressive 64, but South Wilts gradually tightened their grip through disciplined bowling and regular breakthroughs. Tom Grant and Archie Fairfax-Ross both claimed three wickets, combining accuracy with intelligent changes of pace to halt the chase during the middle overs. Archie Pascoe also struck key blows with three wickets of his own as Portsmouth lost momentum after Siddiqui’s dismissal. The fielding effort remained sharp throughout, and South Wilts wrapped up the innings in 38.2 overs to complete an impressive opening-day performance and collect 22 league points.
South Wilts 2nd XI vs Winton CC – Lost by 72 runs
South Wilts 2nd XI were beaten by 72 runs after Winton CC posted an imposing 258 for 7 from their 45 overs. The hosts were dealt an early setback before a ball had even been bowled, with Rob Pittman ruled out after suffering an injury during the warm-up, forcing South Wilts to reshuffle both their batting order and bowling plans. Winton took advantage of good batting conditions and kept the scoreboard moving steadily throughout the innings, building useful partnerships and maintaining pressure despite South Wilts picking up wickets at regular intervals. Although the bowlers worked hard to prevent the total from climbing even higher, Winton’s depth and consistency ultimately helped them set a challenging target.
In reply, South Wilts showed resilience but were unable to sustain the partnerships needed to seriously threaten the chase, eventually being bowled out for 186 in the 42nd over. The standout contribution came from Joe Cranch, who played an excellent innings under pressure and provided the backbone of the South Wilts response with a composed and determined knock. Cranch combined sensible shot selection with positive intent to keep the innings alive, but with wickets falling regularly around him the required rate gradually drifted out of reach. Despite the defeat, South Wilts continued to compete hard throughout the afternoon and collected valuable batting and bowling bonus points from a difficult contest.
South Wilts 3rd XI vs Over Wallop CC – Won by 137 runs
South Wilts 3rd XI delivered one of the standout performances of the weekend with a dominant 137-run victory over Over Wallop CC after amassing an impressive 316 for 5 from their 45 overs. The innings was built on strong contributions throughout the top order, with Henry Smith leading the way with 71, while Oliver Wright struck a fluent 59 in an opening partnership worth 130. Alexander Vincent added an aggressive 30 before Adam Smith powered his way to 56 from just 46 balls. Flo Sharman’s composed 39 ensured the innings maintained momentum deep into the closing overs, while a large number of extras helped South Wilts set a daunting target.
Over Wallop’s reply never fully recovered after an excellent opening spell from the South Wilts bowlers reduced them to 22 for 3. Charlie Wills counterattacked superbly with a remarkable 131 from 76 balls, briefly threatening to turn the contest, but he received little sustained support from the rest of the batting line-up. Asher Osborn and Henry Smith both struck twice early on, before Matt Anderson-Emm’s three wickets in the middle overs removed the remaining resistance. Jody Everett and Jonas Ball also chipped in as South Wilts bowled the visitors out for 179 to complete an emphatic team performance.
South Wilts 4th XI vs Winterbourne CC – Lost by 155 runs
South Wilts 4th XI endured a difficult afternoon against Winterbourne CC, who produced a commanding batting display to post 287 for 3 from their 40 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat. Fielding a particularly young side, South Wilts faced a tough challenge against an experienced Winterbourne batting line-up that scored consistently throughout the innings and capitalised on any loose deliveries. Despite the result, the match provided valuable experience for several younger players stepping up into senior cricket, with the side continuing to work hard in the field and showing good spirit throughout the innings.
Chasing a demanding target, South Wilts struggled to establish sustained momentum and were eventually dismissed for 132 in 31.3 overs. Although there were moments of resistance and the team managed to secure a handful of batting and bowling bonus points, regular wickets prevented any realistic challenge to Winterbourne’s total. Against a strong visiting side, the young South Wilts team continued to battle throughout the afternoon, gaining valuable experience that will benefit them as the season progresses.
