Another scorching Saturday brought some excellent cricket across the club, with strong wins for the 1st and 2nd XIs, a tough afternoon for the 3rds against a strong visiting side, and the 4ths showing plenty of spirit despite defeat.

1st XI vs Bashley 1st XI
On a stunning Saturday at the main ground, with the square and outfield looking picture perfect in the blazing heat, it was no surprise that skipper Ben Draper chose to bat after winning the toss.

After an early wicket, South Wilts settled superbly thanks to a magnificent 135-run second wicket partnership between James Degg and overseas player Josh Chippendale. Chippendale continued to impress with a classy 58 before departing, while Degg carried on in dominant fashion despite the heat, eventually falling for a brilliant 135.

That platform allowed others to play with freedom late in the innings. Tom Cheater added 32, while Archie Fairfax-Ross (23*) and Draper (14*) helped push the total to an imposing 289 at the interval. Still, on a very good batting wicket and lightning-fast outfield, nothing ever felt guaranteed.

In reply, Bashley never really managed to build sustained momentum, particularly after Matt Falconer removed both openers with the score on just 26.

From there, wickets fell steadily as the South Wilts attack once again impressed collectively. Archie Fairfax-Ross claimed another three wickets, Tom Grant picked up two, Archie Pascoe added two, and Falconer finished with two of his own. A run out for former South Wilts player Jack Stearman capped things off as Bashley were dismissed for 166.

A vital 22 points sees South Wilts sitting top of the Southern Premier League table - for now at least.

2nd XI vs Fair Oak 2nd XI
The 2nd XI travelled to Fair Oak knowing that in the sweltering conditions, batting first looked the obvious route. Having lost the toss, skipper Tim Pearce feared a long afternoon in the field - only for Fair Oak to surprisingly choose to bowl.

South Wilts made a steady rather than spectacular start, reaching 68 for 2 before Liam Vermeulen once again showed his quality. The overseas all-rounder built an excellent innings of 79, while Pearce anchored things superbly with a composed 68 as wickets fell around him.

With Pearce departing at 224 for 6, it was left to South Wilts debutant George Allom to provide the late fireworks, smashing a rapid 45 from just 25 balls to lift the total to an excellent 263.

In response, Fair Oak initially looked well placed. Kevin Chidrawi struck early, but the next wicket did not fall until 106, leaving the hosts in a strong position.

However, an injury retirement for Ramanan appeared to completely halt Fair Oak’s momentum. Wickets then began to tumble steadily before an inspired bowling change brought on George Nash, who ripped through the lower order with a superb spell of 4 for 20 to close out the game quickly.

A maximum 24-point haul sees the 2nd XI move up to 4th place and firmly amongst the early pace-setters.

3rd XI vs Andover 2nd XI
The 3rd XI won the toss and chose to bat on an Academy pitch that is rapidly becoming known for producing runs.

It would be fair to say the innings started cautiously against a disciplined opening spell from the visitors. Ivo Leyland then lifted the tempo beautifully, reaching a fine 50 before holing out attempting to push on further.

Returning to cricket from the golf course in style, Will Welsh completely shifted the momentum of the innings with a brilliant 71 from just 44 balls. Jacob Rowe supported well before showcasing his growing talent with another classy half-century of his own.

South Wilts eventually posted exactly the same total as the 2nd XI - 263 - but on such a strong batting surface it always felt like the bowlers would need something special.

So it proved. Andover opener Watta Waduge looked comfortable throughout and finished agonisingly short of a century with 99, well supported by Green’s 72. Their opening stand of 135 immediately put South Wilts on the back foot.

Despite a committed effort in the field, Jonas Ball was the standout with an excellent 3 for 27, but Andover eventually ran out comfortable winners with overs to spare.

4th XI vs Dinton 1st XI
The 4th XI made the short local trip to Dinton and, like most teams on such a hot afternoon, the hosts chose to bat first after winning the toss.

Dinton’s experienced Andy O’Neill made full use of the conditions with a well-made 80, supported by Coombes with 38, as the South Wilts bowlers toiled in the heat.

Ed Welsh and Jake Redding were the standout performers with two wickets apiece, and the pair later proved equally important with the bat.

Chasing 223, South Wilts endured a nightmare start, collapsing to 10 for 5 and appearing destined for a very quick finish. However, Welsh and Redding had other ideas.

The pair produced a superb 97-run partnership that kept Dinton out in the field far longer than expected. Welsh eventually departed for an excellent 62, with Redding following soon after for a determined 27. The remaining wickets then fell quickly as South Wilts were bowled out for 125.

There was also a notable mention for Saul Smith, who spent the weekend playing on loan at local side Woodgreen as part of South Wilts’ continued commitment to supporting local clubs where possible. With strong player availability expected throughout the season, the club hopes to continue creating loan opportunities that benefit both South Wilts players and neighbouring sides alike.

With players beginning to find form and confidence across the club, attention now turns to Week 5 and hopefully another weekend of sunshine and strong cricket.
