Another excellent weekend for South Wilts saw three victories, one weather-related abandonment, and a host of outstanding individual performances across the club.

Young Jake Redding stole the headlines with his maiden senior century for the 4th XI, while Henry Smith and Jonas Ball both fell agonisingly short of three figures for the 3rd XI. With the return of some fine summer weather came some equally fine cricket, leaving South Wilts in strong positions across several divisions.

1st XI vs Burridge 1st XI – Abandoned

Having arrived early for warm-ups, concerns were already being raised by skipper Ben Draper regarding the condition of the run-ups. Despite the recent spell of dry weather, the country had received significant rainfall during the week and both ends of the square remained soft and boggy.

After several hours of hard work from players, officials and ground staff to improve conditions, the umpires allowed play to begin.

Draper won the toss and elected to field, but with Burridge reaching 38 for 1 after 10.2 overs it became increasingly apparent that the run-ups were deteriorating and becoming unsafe for bowlers.

With player welfare the priority, the umpires had little option but to abandon the match.

Nothing was lost in the title race, but it was undoubtedly a frustrating afternoon given the glorious weather overhead.

2nd XI vs Cadnam 1st XI

Back on home soil, conditions looked ideal for cricket and Cadnam elected to field first after winning the toss.

The decision initially looked inspired when Laurence Yeo was dismissed without scoring, leaving South Wilts 15 for 1. However, Gabriel Williams joined the in-form Liam Vermeulen and together they laid a strong foundation through a partnership filled with attractive strokeplay.

Vermeulen's excellent run of form continued before he eventually departed for 33. Williams carried on superbly, compiling a classy 57 before finding a fielder in the deep.

Will Musgrove then took over guiding the middle order, playing fluently all around the wicket for a well-crafted 56. Contributions throughout the order helped South Wilts post a competitive 233, with conditions suggesting there was enough assistance for the bowlers to make life difficult.

The reply started perfectly. George Gundill struck early with a clean bowling the opening bat, and alongside the experienced Marc Burton they reduced Cadnam to 32 for 3.

A partnership approaching three figures threatened to swing the game towards the visitors before a bizarre run out changed everything. A wayward throw sailed over the wicketkeeper Musgrove, tempting Cadnam into an ambitious second run. Thomas Barrett reacted quickest, cutting off the ball and completing a run out that completely shifted the momentum.

Thomas Barrett then added important wickets with the ball, finishing with 2 for 25 as Cadnam fell behind the required rate.

South Wilts eventually took all 10 wickets, securing maximum 24 points and maintaining pressure on fellow promotion contenders Calmore and Winton.

3rd XI vs Penton 1st XI

With Matt Anderson-Emm celebrating the arrival of his second child, returning from injury Connor Bain took over captaincy duties and immediately won the toss, electing to bat.

South Wilts started steadily before Henry Smith and Jonas Ball began to accelerate on a lightning-fast outfield. Both batsmen settled in for a long haul knock and produced one of the partnerships of the season to date.

The pair added a magnificent 196 for the first wicket before Ball fell agonisingly short of a deserved century for a superb 94.

Bain then arrived and immediately added momentum with a quickfire 21 from just 15 deliveries.

At the other end, Henry Smith carried his bat throughout the innings, finishing unbeaten on 97. It was a good innings that deserved three figures but ultimately he ran out of overs before the milestone could be reached.

South Wilts closed on 239 for 1 from their 45 overs.

Penton approached the chase positively, playing with plenty of attacking intent, but on this occasion their aggressive approach played into South Wilts' hands.

Promising youngster Asher Osborn impressed with the new ball, claiming 3 for 33, while Albin Jacob provided excellent support.

Naimur Rahman then controlled the middle overs brilliantly, collecting 3 for 26 as wickets continued to tumble.

Attempting to force the pace, Penton collapsed to 144 all out in just 23 overs, handing South Wilts a comfortable victory and maximum 24 points.

The result keeps the 3rd XI firmly in the promotion picture in County Division 4.

4th XI vs Steeple Langford 1st XI

The 4th XI travelled to Steeple Langford looking for a much-needed victory and were invited to bat first.

After the early loss of skipper Sean Burke, Jacob Nash and Sahan Perera rebuilt effectively, taking South Wilts to 97 before Perera departed for a valuable 40.

Young Yeo matched his father's score from the 2nd XI before Jake Redding arrived at the crease and completely transformed the innings.

Alongside Jacob Nash, Redding put together a superb 123-run partnership. Nash eventually departed for an excellent 67, but Redding continued to dominate.

In his standout innings for the club, the young South Wilts player smashed his maiden senior century, reaching three figures from just 42 balls before eventually finishing with a magnificent 110.

His innings included nine fours and an incredible nine sixes.

South Wilts closed on an imposing 243 for 4, giving themselves every chance of victory.

Steeple Langford's reply was anchored by an excellent unbeaten 101 from Liam Harvey, but despite preserving wickets, the hosts steadily drifted further behind the required rate.

The South Wilts bowlers delivered an excellent collective performance, with Sahan Perera following up his batting contribution with outstanding figures of 4 for 34.

He was well supported by Jake Redding, Saul Smith, Charlie Bacon, Simon Miles, Jacob Nash and Miles Jones as the visitors secured a valuable victory and 22 points in their battle to climb away from the lower reaches of County Division 5E.

1st XI vs Fair Oak 1st XI - SPCL T20 Group Stage

South Wilts 1st XI continued their impressive start to the SPCL T20 campaign with a commanding nine-wicket victory over Fair Oak CC, a result that sent them to the top of the South Group after two rounds of fixtures.

After being asked to field first, South Wilts immediately took control through a disciplined bowling display. Fair Oak struggled to build momentum throughout their innings, with wickets falling at regular intervals and scoring opportunities kept to a minimum.

Harry Broderick was the standout performer with the ball, returning excellent figures of 3-13 from four overs. Ben Jack provided strong support with 2-18, while Trishawn Francis and George Allom claimed a wicket apiece. Tight spells from Matt Falconer and Archie Pascoe ensured the pressure never relented as Fair Oak were restricted to 84-7 from their 20 overs.

Connor Gibson top-scored for the hosts with 19, while Matt White added 17, but South Wilts’ bowlers maintained control throughout and never allowed Fair Oak to establish a meaningful partnership.

In reply, South Wilts made light work of the chase. Trishawn Francis set the tone with a brisk 21 from just 15 balls, striking two fours and a six before becoming the visitors’ only casualty.

Josh Chippendale then took centre stage with a composed unbeaten 44 from 38 deliveries. His innings, featuring five boundaries and two sixes, ensured there would be no way back for Fair Oak. Lawrence Yeo finished unbeaten on 9 as South Wilts cruised to 88-1 in just 10.2 overs, sealing victory with 58 balls to spare.

The comprehensive win lifted South Wilts to the summit of the SPCL South Group with a perfect record from their opening two matches and an impressive net run rate of +4.25. With only the top two teams progressing to the quarter-finals, the victory could prove significant as the group stage enters its decisive phase.

Attention now turns to the final two group fixtures. South Wilts host Langley Manor on 12 July before travelling to Fawley on 19 July, knowing that two more victories would guarantee a place in the knockout stages and secure top spot in the group.
