Another superb Saturday for South Wilts Cricket Club saw three of the four senior sides record victories as the business end of the season edges ever closer.

With availability a little light this week with summer breaks, the club produced some magnificent performances from those who donned the whites for South Wilts, keeping the momentum going. The 1st XI produced another excellent all-round performance to defeat Alton by 93 runs and remain firmly in the Southern Premier League title race. The 2nd XI retained top spot in County Division 2A with a commanding victory at Mudeford, while the 3rd XI continued their promotion push thanks to another impressive display. It wasn't to be for the 4th XI, whose recent winning run came to an end at Damerham, but valuable points were still collected in the battle to secure Division 5 status.

Into the final third of the season, every point is becoming increasingly important. South Wilts remain well placed across all four senior sides, with promotion and title ambitions still very much alive.

Fairfax-Ross Falls Agonisingly Short of his ton as Grant bowls South Wilts to Victory

On another glorious Saturday, skipper Ben Draper won the toss and, on what looked another excellent batting surface with a lightning-fast outfield, elected to bat first.

Things did not quite go according to plan early on. After his marathon innings the previous weekend, Harry Broderick departed cheaply, while Gabriel Williams, promoted from the 2nd XI to cover for the absent Degg followed with the score on 36 for 2. When Joshua Chippendale fell at 51 and Tom Cheater at 68, South Wilts suddenly found themselves needing a rebuilding job.

That responsibility fell to skipper Ben Draper and Archie Fairfax-Ross, who calmly rebuilt the innings with an excellent partnership worth almost 90 runs. Draper eventually departed taking the score on 155, but Fairfax-Ross continued to dominate proceedings.

Batting with increasing confidence, Archie looked set for a deserved century before eventually falling for a superb 95, narrowly missing out on three figures. He was well supported by Matt Falconer, whose unbeaten 45 batting with the tail ensured South Wilts finished strongly.

By the close of the innings, South Wilts had posted an imposing 270 all out from 63.4 overs. A strong total, although one that still gave Alton hope on an excellent batting wicket.

Alton's reply mirrored that of South Wilts. An early wicket left them 0 for 1 before partnerships involving Bater, Bolton, Corbett and Wright steadily rebuilt the innings.

At around 120, however, the game turned decisively.

The dismissal of Wright sparked a collapse as 124 for 4 quickly became 124 for 6, with South Wilts tightening their grip through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding.

The outstanding performer was once again Tom Grant, whose spell of 6 for 26 from 9.4 overs completely dismantled the Alton middle and lower order. Supported by Archie Fairfax-Ross (2 for 62) and an excellent team performance in the field, South Wilts dismissed Alton to record a convincing 93-run victory.

The win keeps South Wilts firmly in second place in the Southern Premier League, maintaining the pressure on leaders St Cross Symondians as attention now turns to next week's trip to Bashley.

2nd XI 178 for 3 (24pts) vs Mudeford 1st XI 174 ao (5pts) won by 7 wickets

16 year-old Cordle's Century means 2nd XI Stay Top

The 2nd XI travelled to the south coast to face Mudeford knowing another victory would be vital in maintaining their place at the top of County Division 2A.

Mudeford won the toss and chose to bat, but South Wilts quickly settled into another disciplined bowling performance.

Although no individual batter dominated proceedings, Mudeford slowly accumulated runs throughout the innings, reaching 88 for 5 before edging their way towards a competitive total. However, regular wickets prevented any meaningful acceleration, and they eventually closed on 174 all out.

Once again, it was a superb all-round bowling display.

Kevin Chidrawi continued his excellent season with 3 for 24, while the returning Rob Pittman marked his steady return to fitness with 3 for 38. Captain Tom Pearce again demonstrated why he is one of the league's most economical bowlers, returning figures of 2 for 15.

Chasing 175, South Wilts made one notable change at the top of the order with Lawrence Yeo unavailable, creating an opportunity for the in form Max Cordle.

And what an opportunity he took.

Opening alongside Liam Vermeulen, Max immediately looked at home, playing with maturity and confidence throughout. The pair shared an outstanding opening century partnership that effectively settled the contest.

Max completed a magnificent 100 not out, another home-grown youngster announcing himself at senior level with another outstanding innings.

With the game comfortably under control, both Max and skipper Tom Pearce retired to allow Connor Bain and Will Musgrove valuable time in the middle before South Wilts completed a comfortable seven-wicket victory.

Another maximum 24-point haul keeps the 2nd XI at the summit of County Division 2A.

Promotion remains a long way off... but the cricket being played certainly suggests the boys intend to stay there.

3rd XI 136 for 3 (23pts) vs Longparish 2nd XI 132 ao (4pts) won by 7 wickets

Asher's Five-for and Freddie's Form Keep 3rds Flying

The 3rd XI welcomed Longparish to the Academy Ground, where the visitors won the toss and elected to bat.

It quickly became apparent that decision may not have been the right one.

Longparish never recovered from a relentless South Wilts bowling display and were dismissed for just 132 in 28 overs.

Remarkably, wicketkeeper-captain Kerr contributed 86 of those runs, with no other batter reaching double figures.

The star of the afternoon was another South Wilts promising youngster, Asher Osborn, who produced one of his finest spells in South Wilts colours, finishing with superb figures of 5 for 19 from 6.4 overs.

He received excellent support from Jacob Rowe (2 for 20), George Nash, and skipper Matt Anderson-Emm (2 for 27) as the bowlers dominated throughout.

With availability stretched across the club, Freddie Jones earned promotion from the 4th XI into the 3rds and once again demonstrated exactly why he is regarded as another of the club's bright young talents.

Fresh from consecutive centuries for the 4th XI, Freddie calmly anchored the chase with a composed 76 not out from just 69 balls, striking 14 fours and a six.

Supported by Tom Woodhouse-Smith, deputising for other absentees, who alongside Flo Sharman, added valuable contributions as South Wilts comfortably chased down the target for the loss of just three wickets.

Another 23-point victory keeps the 3rd XI firmly in the promotion race in County Division 4B.

4th XI 175 for 8 (7pts) vs Damerham 1st XI 176 for 3 (23pts) lost by 7 wickets

Spirited Display Despite Winning Run Ending

The 4th XI travelled to local side Damerham with availability stretched following promotions throughout the club. It gave several other younger players further opportunity to step into Senior cricket

With players moving from the 4ths into the 3rds, the 3rds into the 2nds and the 2nds into the 1sts, skipper Alex Evans knew his side faced another tough afternoon.

Damerham won the toss and elected to field.

A steady opening partnership from Miles Jones and Sean Burke laid a half century platform before Evans arrived at the crease and immediately took the attack to the opposition.

The skipper produced another entertaining innings, smashing 67 from just 39 balls, including 10 fours and a six, helping South Wilts post 175 for 8 from their 40 overs.

Although competitive, it perhaps felt 20 or 30 runs short on a decent batting surface.

In reply, South Wilts made an encouraging start, reducing Damerham to 67 for 3, with wickets shared between Paul Hemmings, Alex Evans and Naimur Rahman.

However, Bealey produced the decisive innings of the afternoon, blasting 86 from just 59 balls, including 12 fours and two sixes, to take the game away from the visitors.

Damerham eventually reached their target with seven wickets in hand.

Despite the defeat, the 4th XI collected another seven valuable points, maintaining a healthy cushion above the relegation places.

With several important fixtures still to come, a couple more victories should comfortably secure Division 5 status.
