South Wilts Under 19s maintained their unbeaten start to the Wiltshire Youth Cricket League season with a thrilling one-wicket victory over Winsley CC in a match that went right down to the final two deliveries.

Winsley posted a competitive 171-5 from their 20 overs after choosing to bat. J Hawkins led the way with an aggressive 50 from just 31 balls, while J Cousens (33) and R Pugh (32) kept the scoreboard moving through the middle overs. South Wilts shared the wickets around, with M Cordle (2-38) and T Barrett (2-28) the pick of the bowlers.

Chasing 172, South Wilts made an excellent start. G Williams struck 9 from five balls before M Cordle continued his impressive all-round performance with a fluent 38 from 23 deliveries, putting the home side firmly in the hunt.

Captain Alex Vincent then anchored the innings superbly. His composed retired not out 50 ensured South Wilts remained on course, but with retirement compulsory on reaching fifty, the chase suddenly became far more tense.

Winsley sensed an opportunity and fought back brilliantly. N Owen claimed outstanding figures of 4-17, while wickets fell at regular intervals to leave South Wilts needing just a handful of runs with only their two youngest players at the crease.

Showing maturity well beyond their years, 12-year-olds Dhanish and Ometh produced the defining partnership of the match. Remaining calm under pressure, the pair rotated the strike intelligently, ran superbly between the wickets and added a priceless seven-run stand to edge South Wilts ever closer to victory.

With just two runs required, Dhanish was unfortunately run out, allowing Vincent to return to the crease under the competition's retirement rules. The tension was short-lived as the Winsley bowler, under immense pressure, delivered two wides, taking South Wilts to 172-9 in 19.4 overs and sealing a dramatic one-wicket victory.

While Vincent's unbeaten fifty provided the foundation and Cordle's all-round display was instrumental, the composure shown by Dhanish and Ometh in the closing moments deserved special praise. Their intelligent running and calm decision-making under pressure turned a tense finish into a memorable team victory.

The win keeps South Wilts at the top of the league table with three wins from three, while Winsley can take great credit for a spirited performance that pushed the league leaders all the way.
