South Wilts Under 19s emerged victorious from one of the most remarkable matches of the season, defeating Potterne by 30 runs in an incredible contest that produced 560 runs and 41 sixes on a tiny Potterne ground where the bat dominated throughout.

After Potterne elected to field, South Wilts made full use of the short boundaries from the outset. Freddie Jones set the tone with a lively 13 from just six balls before Max Cordle launched an extraordinary assault, racing to 50 from only 14 deliveries, including five fours and five sixes, before retiring under the competition rules.

Gabriel Williams then produced the innings of the day. Initially unbeaten before the innings closed, he returned to the crease after South Wilts had lost all seven wickets, as permitted under the league’s retirement rules. Williams unleashed an astonishing finish, ending 69 not out from just 20 balls, smashing eight sixes and four fours at a strike rate of 345.

Charlie Allom was equally destructive, retiring unbeaten on 51 from only 17 balls, while George Nash (30), Ollie Wright (23) and Jake Redding (13) all kept the momentum going as South Wilts amassed a daunting 295-7.

Although wickets fell regularly, Potterne’s bowlers found little assistance. Oscar Fox was the standout performer with 2-31 from his four overs, while Alfie Doran claimed three wickets despite the relentless assault from the South Wilts batters.

Facing a target approaching 300, Potterne refused to surrender. They matched South Wilts’ aggressive approach and produced an outstanding chase that kept the game alive throughout.

Zaman Shafi blazed to a rapid 55 from 17 balls, retiring not out after clearing the ropes six times. Charlie Bevan narrowly missed his own half-century with an entertaining 49 from 26 deliveries, while Alex Hoskins added 50 from 27 balls. Christian Syms chipped in with 31 from just 13 balls as Potterne continued to find the boundary with remarkable regularity.

Despite the avalanche of runs, South Wilts continued to create chances in the field. Asher Osborn produced the most effective spell, taking 3-39 from his four overs, while Jacob Rowe claimed 2-54. George Nash also picked up a wicket, and there were sharp pieces of fielding as Freddie Jones and Gabriel Williams both completed important run outs to halt Potterne’s momentum at key moments.

Potterne eventually finished on 265-8, an exceptional total that would have won most T20 matches, but on this occasion it still left them 30 runs short.

The match was a spectacular advert for youth cricket. With 41 sixes, fearless batting from both sides and more than 550 runs scored in just 40 overs, spectators were treated to an unforgettable evening of attacking cricket.

South Wilts’ explosive top order, led by Gabriel Williams, Max Cordle and Charlie Allom, ultimately proved the difference, securing a memorable victory.

The victory means South Wilts have made the perfect start to their Wiltshire Youth Cricket U19s campaign, with two wins from two matches and a maximum 10 points to sit top of the table after the opening fortnight of the season. Attention now turns to a testing away trip to Burbage & Easton Royal, before back-to-back home fixtures against Winsley and Bradford-on-Avon, as the young side look to maintain their unbeaten start.
